Enhancing patient outcomes and streamlining clinical workflows by transforming acute care with virtual nursing.

Case Study

Geisinger: Transforming acute care

Geisinger began their virtual care journey in 2010 and has since successfully implemented virtual nursing. They recognized the need for virtual nursing due to workforce challenges and the necessity to deliver care differently to better serve their community.

They collaborated with their workforce and patients to develop the program, and the pilot began in late 2022 within the medical surgery department. The goal was to enable their teams to focus on providing in-person care, so non-touch clinical tasks such as admission to discharge, double-checks for high-risk medication, and patient education and mentoring were shifted to their virtual team.

Since launching the pilot, they have expanded to seven campuses, supporting over 500 beds, and have successfully admitted 15,000 patients and discharged 8,000, resulting in improved overall admission and discharge times.
